24.09.2009
Canada purchased two unmanned submersibles from International Submarine Engineering Ltd. which are planned to be used for establishing its territorial claims to the part of Arctic, says AFP informational agency.
"Canada is the world's first country using this technology for mapping of Arctic", declared John Weston, Canadian MP at the transfer ceremony of automatic subs.
In Arctic unmanned submersibles will perform data collection for justification of external boundary of Canadian continental shelf.
In recent years Arctic has become a close attention object of Russia, the USA, Great Britain and other countries as well. The US, Canada, China, Germany and Sweden declared development of icebreaking fleets. Global warming causes ablation of arctic packs and opens not only strategic maritime space but also access to natural resources, including oil and gas.
