07.10.2009
Somali pirates assaulted French military ship La Somme by mistake last night. Several pirates were taken captive.

That was reported by ITAR-TASS on Wednesday. According to French sources, pirates on small boat attacked refueler which was mistakenly considered a civil tanker in the dark.

Nobody suffered during seize operation, says AFP referring to official representative of French Navy. La Somme is one of the ships taking part in international anti-piracy operation near Somali.

According to International Maritime Bureau, 240 pirate attacks were recorded during first half of 2009 which is twice much as in 2008. The assaults mostly happened in the Gulf of Aden off Somali coast. 146 pirate attacks were recorded there in 2009, 32 of them resulted in vessel hijacking.
