Los Angeles administration officially obliged US Navy to clean out territory near Morris Dam where torpedo manufacture is located.
The factory had been producing torpedoes since 1939 till 1993 and Navy tested them in experimental tank nearby Morris Dam in L.A.
The US Navy expended $6.5 mln for drainage of 17 000 cubic yards reservoir; however, 15-20% of toxic solution is still on the bottom, says Michelle Antonovich, city administration observer.
Antonovich insists that Navy should clean out 100% of territory for the purpose of health support of citizens and protection of natural environment.
Almost 8 ha of plant's area was used for production and upgrading of torpedoes, bombs and missiles, including
Polaris missiles designed for US submarines.
According to samples, the territory is contaminated by missile and torpedo fuel component.
Research Center was relocated in 1997 and Navy had to clean out the area for further transfer to ranger station and water area administration, and then to territorial Department of Public Works.
US Navy denies presence of contaminants and toxic agents in the plant's area.
