USS New Mexico SSN finished sea trials

New US nuclear-powered submarine New Mexico has successfully finished sea trials and returned to Northrop Grumman Newport News, informs DefPro. During the trials the sub passed tests of speed performance, onboard systems and carried out submergence.

New Mexico is sixth Virginia-project submarine. The sub was launched in 2004; it was put afloat in December 2008. New Mexico has become the second US sub obtained a name of a state. It is expected to be commissioned by the end of 2009.

Displacement of USS New Mexico SSN is 7,900 tonnes; hull length is 115 meters. The sub's maximum speed is 25 knots. New Mexico is armed with four 533-mm torpedo tubes and 12 BGM-109 Tomahawk launching tubes.
