Scientific research center for modeling of ice maritime operations was opened on Dec 21 in St. Petersburg at facilities of FSUE Krylov State Scientific Center.

The opening ceremony was attended by Deputy Minister of Transport Viktor Olersky, Project Research Manager and Chief Designer of Arctic Technologies at the Krylov center Valery Belyashov, Director General of the Krylov center Andrei Dutov, honorable guests and the press.
According to the project manager Valery Belyashov, designing of the simulator took one year and over RUR 20 mln. The center includes two systems: the first one helps to model complicated towing operations in ice conditions, and the second one models approach to drilling platform and taking oil products aboard tanker. "All those processes are maximally mathematized so that allow to make recommendations both for hydrocarbon production on the shelf and designing of prospective ice-class tankers and supply vessels", pointed out Valery Belyashov.
In prospect, it is planned to establish a complex for mathematical modeling of ice maritime operations.
As for Viktor Olersky, with opening of the facility the Krylov center achieved a new expertise.
The scientific and research simulation system will be used to train navigators for sailing in different conditions. Unique feature of the system lies in high modeling accuracy of ships maneuvering in various conditions, including ice ones. It also models mutual influence of ships on each other when moving and approaching stationary assets. This helps to model port infrastructure, single buoy moorings, off-loading terminals, as well as their accurate interaction with vessels. The simulator helps designers and navigators in joint testing and confirming technical solutions made at all construction stages of sea structures and vessels, from conceptual design to service documentation, as well as train personnel. The simulator is also capable to model emergency situations, including those in the Arctic conditions.
Combined with experimental facilities of the institute, the simulator system will help to resolve complicated problems during exploration of Russian Arctic shelf.
