B-138 Obninsk is a Project 671RTMK Schuka nuclear-powered attack submarine (SSN).

Northern Fleet, Zaozersk

CONSTRUCTION, NAME

The submarine was laid down on December 17, 1988 at Admiralteysky Zavod shipyard (Leningrad); launched on August 5, 1989; commissioned into Northern Fleet on February 28, 1991 under the name of K-138; renamed into B-138 on June 3, 1992; obtained the name of Obninsk on May 5, 2000 being taken under patronage of Obninsk town administration.

MILESTONES

In 1991 the sub won the Navy Commander's Prize for attack of a task force and was titled "excellent submarine" at the year end.

In 1992 the sub was second in the Navy Commander's Prize contest and was titled "excellent submarine" at the year end.

In 1997, 1998 the sub took part in Northern Fleet's integrated exercise.

As of 2008, the sub was in service.

Two VM-4 type water-cooled and water-moderated reactors, turbine-geared propulsion unit GTZA-615, total power is 31,000 shp. One shafting line, multi-blade screw, 2 x 375 shp auxiliary motors.
