Russia to enlarge its icebreaker fleet

This year Russia plans to start construction of new-gen multipurpose double-draft nuclear-powered icebreaker with power of about 60 megawatt, reports Interfax referring to FGU Rosmorrechflot.

New icebreaker will be a multifunctional one – it will be capable to render ice-breaking assistance, perform salvage and rescue operations, and be used while oil spill response. The vessel's ability will ensure to render ice-breaking assistance through whole Northern Sea Route in traditional period of Arctic navigation [May-October] and year-round in West Arctic.
