Democratic People's Republic of Korea carried out 100 artillery shots sidewards the Yellow Sea close to South Korea on Aug 9, reports Yonhap.

Firings were performed right after naval exercise which was held by Seoul near disputed Northern Limit Line. Details of the incident are unknown.

At the same time BBC News reports of 10 shots impacted within N Korean waters. According to the agency, artillery shots were made at 5.30 pm (local time).

S Korea's naval exercise started on Aug 5 in the waters of the Yellow Sea. 4,500 servicemen, 29 ships, and 50 aircrafts took part in the drills. The exercise was a reaction on S Korean corvette Cheonan torpedoed by N Korean submarine in March 2010.

It got about on Aug 4 that Pyongyang had deployed air defense systems nearby demilitarized zone at the time when Cheonan was scuppered. That hindered flights of S Korean aviation in the region.
