Russian General Staff placed troops of Strategic Command "East" on high alert, reports Interfax referring to Chief of the General Staff Nikolai Makarov.

According to Makarov, all due activities were conducted in Strategic Command "East" because of strained situation at Korean peninsula. General Staff keeps on tracking the situation in the region.

Recall that the U.S. and South Korea charge DPRK for torpedoing of South Korean corvette Cheonan which caused deaths of 46 sailors. North Korea carried out artillery bombardment of South Korean island Yeonpyeong late in Nov; consequently, four citizens of South Korea including two military servicemen died. In response to North Korea's provocations, the U.S. and South Korea conducted large-scale naval maneuvers near North Korean border.

Strategic Command of Russian Armed Forces "East" includes military formations deployed at the Far East and Pacific Fleet.
