Abkhaz President Bagapsh confirms plans for Russian naval base in Abkhazia

Abkhaz President Bagapsh confirms plans for Russian naval base in Abkhazia 27.01.2009
Abkhazia has officially agreed to the construction of a Russian naval base on its territory, president of the self-proclaimed republic Sergei Bagapsh announced on Monday.

Bagapsh added that an agreement on principle for the creation of a base of the Russian Black Sea Fleet in the city of Ochamchir existed, and that the still existent threat of diversion in the region prompts the Russian and Abkhazian sides to look for ways to expedite the questions related to the construction of the base.

The construction of a base in Ochamchir is scheduled to begin this year and will take a few years to complete, the Itar-Tass news agency reported.

An official signing of documents regulating the construction of the naval base in Ochamchir has yet to take place.
