Novorossiysk Coast Guard vessel started to protect Abkhazian border 21.09.2009
Russian Coast Guard ship Novorossiysk has started to protect Abkhazian sea border on Sunday, says press-service of Russian FSB Border Directorate in Abkhazia.

Gunnery ship with "pretty serious" capabilities will maintain order in the territorial waters of the Republic of Abkhazia, said Faik Mamedov, the captain of Novorossiysk.

According to press-service of Russian FSB Border Directorate in Abkhazia, this is the first patrol ship of prospective guard division supposed to consist of up to 10 boats of new projects Sobol and Mangust. They will be basing in Ochamchir.

Since the beginning of the year Georgia has detained over 20 cargo ships heading for "occupied" Abkhazia. In reply to that, Abkhazian president Sergey Bagapsh declared that Abkhazia would destroy Georgian ships violated its border.

Patrol boat Sobol 12220-project is designed for protection of territorial waters and economic zone, performing patrol, customs and search-and-rescue operations. Displacement is 57 t, length is 27.9 m, width is 4.4 m, draft is 3.27 m, speed is 47 knots, crew is 6 men. Armament: missile/artillery system Vikhr-K (4 missiles, 30-mm gun mount AK-306), 14.5-mm machinegun.

Displacement of patrol boat Mirazh 14310-project is 127 t, length is 35.4 m, width is 6.79 m, draft is 4 m, speed is 50 knots, crew is 12 men. Armament: missile system Shturm, 30-mm gun mount AK-306, 8 Igla MANPADS, 2 14.5-mm machineguns.
