A state-of-the-art communication ship for the Russian Navy was launched in St. Petersburg on Monday.

The Yury Ivanov, a Project 18280 ship built at the Severnaya Verf shipyard, will be assigned to the Northern Fleet after it completes sea trials, said Admiral Alexander Tatarinov, chief of the Navy General Staff.

Project 18280 features high versatility, automation and integration of on-board systems. It has a displacement of about 4,000 tons, a range of 8,000 miles and a crew of 120.

Construction of another ship of this project will begin in November, shipyard director Alexander Ushakov said, adding that at least three more were to be built for the Navy.
