Investigation into the Arctic Sea case is over
19.08.2010
Investigative Committee completed inquiry into the case of MV Arctic Sea hijacked in summer 2009, reports RIA Novosti referring to a pleader of accused persons.
According to Interfax, six accused men who have been on remand since the two other hijackers admitted their guilt and agreed to cooperate with investigation will start familiarization with materials of case. The case will be brought to trial in Oct-Nov 2010.
Eight men were arrested as suspects in capture of cargo ship Arctic Sea. Dmitry Savin who recognized himself an initiator of the crime and Andrei Lunev have already got their 7- and 5-year prison terms respectively. Russian citizen Dmitry Bartenev, Estonian Yevgeny Mironov, Latvian Vitaly Lepin, and Alexei Buleyev, Igor Borisov, Alexei Andriushin (citizenship of the latter three is not reported) remain in custody. All of them refused to recognize themselves guilty.
Cargo ship Arctic Sea carrying timber was captured late July 2009 in the Baltic Sea. On Aug 18 Russian marines from frigate Ladny released the vessel and arrested the pirates. Dmitry Savin said to the court about the seizure's paymaster. According to Savin, that was Erik Kross, a businessman and the ex-chief of Estonian intelligence service.
Estonian procuracy said the information about the paymaster is unreliable; Russian Investigative Committee is about to check the information of Kross's involvement. It has not been reported whether any facts were revealed.
