"Pacific Days" started in Vladivostok
01.09.2010
The action "Pacific Days" associated with termination of WW2 was kicked off in Primorsky Krai. It started with meeting of Vladivostok's youngsters with veterans who liberated Sakhalin, Kuril Islands, China, and North Korea from Japanese invaders, reported RIA Novosti referring to a source from regional administration.
Soviet troops put an end to Japanese occupation of China and Korean peninsula during liberatory mission held in Aug 1945. Besides, successfully conducted Sakhalin offensive campaign and Kuril landing operation helped the Soviet Union to return islands previously belonged to Russia.
World War II was completely terminated on Sept 2, 1945 when Japan signed the act of unconditional surrender on board USS Missouri in the Tokyo Bay in the presence of Soviet and US delegations.
"Meeting of Vladivostok's young people with WW2 vets was held at Pacific Fleet (PF) range in Gornostai settlement. Veterans told about last battles of the WW2. Afterwards, there was a concert of the city's top creative teams. Guests tasted field kitchen's food cooked by PF chefs and sweet tea", said the interviewee.
According to him, a solemn assembly was conducted within the framework of "Pacific Days" on Sept 1 in PF Officer's Club. City authorities and PF command spoke congratulations and words of salutation. Schoolchildren of Vladivostok also met with WW2 veterans.
Foundation stone ceremony of Military Historical Center "World War II" will take place in Vladivostok, Russky Island on Sept 2. Veterans will lay wreaths at Eternal Light; PF combat vehicles will parade along the city.
Festivities will continue at Vladivostok's central square with evening program "Pacific Ocean is the Ocean of Peace", said the interviewee. It will include song-and-dance companies of Pacific Fleet, Frontier Service and other creative collectives; rock band Zemlyane will also perform. The event will be finished with fireworks.
To the end, the Alley of Heroes will be opened in Vladivostok on Sept 3. Veterans are going to plant conifers.
Festive events associated with anniversary of WW2 termination will take place in other cities of Primorsky Krai, added the press service representative.
