Kamchatka frontier service base to get RUR 9 bln

Up to RUR 9 bln will be assigned for modernization of Kamchatka base (Russian FSB Frontier Service, Northeast Dept) under the state border modernization program, reported RIA Novosti citing Gen. Lt. Raphael Derbayev, chief of Northeast Dept.
"Construction of 16 objects will be carried out in Kamchatsky Krai till 2015 within the framework of state border modernization program; among them will be administration and residential buildings in outlying regions equipped with the most advanced facilities, and modernization of patrol ships' base in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatski", said Derbayev.
Kamchatka patrol ships' base serves over 20 vessels. They are various frontier service ships including icebreakers, patrol ships and boats. As of today, ships of Russian FSB Frontier Service, Northeast Dept provide protection of state border and biological resources in the East Siberian Sea, the Bering Sea, the Chukchee Sea, the Sea of Okhotsk, and the Pacific Ocean. In summertime the ships of Kamchatka task unit control situation at the Northern Sea Route.
"Kamchatka base has become obsolete. It is planned to expand existent quayside and build new one, dredge fairways, and totally upgrade coastal infrastructure till 2015", said the general.
According to him, organization structure of Frontier Service will be also changed. "Since Jan 1, 2011 Northeast Dept will be re-organized and separated into territorial divisions: Kamchatka, Chukotka, Magadan, and Yakutia. Nevertheless, protection of water zones will remain as a responsibility of Kamchatka patrol unit", explained Derbayev.
Northeast Dept was established on Oct 2, 1945. Today, it secures one third of Russian state border and 855,700 sq miles of economic zone. Its units are located in 5 constituents of the Russian Federation: Kamchatsky Krai, Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), Chukot Autonomous Area, Magadan and Sakhalin regions.
