New commander of Caspian Flotilla was appointed
28.09.2010
Rear Admiral Sergei Alekminsky was appointed a new commander of Caspian Flotilla (CF), reports RIA Novosti referring to CF staff officer.
Former CF Commander Vice Admiral Viktor Kravchuk was previously appointed deputy commander of Baltic Fleet.
Since Feb 2008 RADM Alekminsky has been holding an office of deputy commander of Pacific Fleet (PF) northeast task force. Prior to that, he commanded PF 217th electronic warfare regiment. In 2009 he led a PF task force consisting of large ASW ship Admiral Tributs, tanker Boris Butoma, and salvage tug MB-99 in anti-piracy mission near the Horn of Africa.
Caspian Flotilla is based in Astrakhan and supports Russia's national interests in the Caspian Sea region, i.e. holds anti-terror activities, secures commercial shipping, and protects state interests in oil deposits zone. The flotilla was established by Peter the Great in 1722. Today, Caspian Flotilla comprises several brigades and task units, naval aviation and coastal defense troops. For example, port of Kaspiysk accommodates 106th sea area defense brigade, 327th Guard unit of surface ships, 242nd unit of landing ships; 77th independent marine brigade has been disbanded. There is missile boats unit in Astrakhan; marine units and CF flagship missile ship Tatarstan are based in Makhachkala. Obsolescence of ships is one of the most urgent problems in Caspian Flotilla. According to the flotilla's ex-commander VADM Viktor Kravchuk, the vessel fleet of Caspian Flotilla will be almost totally renewed by 2016.
