In 2010 Northern Fleet (NF) surface ships and submarines have performed over 10 combat cruises to Arctic, reported RIA Novosti citing Russian Commander-in-Chief ADM Vladimir Vysotsky.

Soviet nuclear-powered submarines of Northern and Pacific fleets annually performed up to 10 patrols in Arctic regions and regularly launched ballistic missiles from underwater and under-ice positions.

"In accordance with defense ministry's strategic deterrence plan, all activities aimed at demonstration of Russia's presence in Arctic are continued. For instance, Northern Fleet has carried out over 10 Arctic patrols in 2010, five of them were held by surface ships", said the commander.

Besides, Russian Air Force conducted 16 patrol flights of Tu-95MS and Tu-160 long-range aircrafts over north part of Atlantic and Arctic oceans.

High-ranking official of Navy Main HQ recently said to RIA Novosti that Russian nuclear subs were not about to stop under-ice patrols in Arctic latitudes; intensity of patrols would depend on assigned tasks.

He underlined that Russian nuclear subs would continue to maintain necessary strategic presence in Arctic waters. This implies regular under-ice patrols of SSBNs with the view to prevent any threats to national security.

According to him, the huge experience of under-ice cruises accumulated in Soviet time now provides timely response on potential external threats. After crisis of 90's which negatively reflected on under-ice activities in Arctic, currently the process of strategic patrols in Arctic has been completely recovered, he concluded.
