S Korea to return Varyag's flag to Russia 03.11.2010

Authorities of S Korean city Inchon (Chemulpo) will return flag of legendary cruiser Varyag to Russia, writes Chosun Ilbo. This ensign along with other 13 items from cruiser Varyag was captured by the Japanese after the Battle at Chemulpo. However, after Japan's defeat in WW2 the flag was brought to South Korea.

The flag will be handed over to Russia under lease; it will be indefinite de facto but really prolonged every two years. The point is that S Korean laws prohibit transfers of cultural heritage objects to foreign countries. Exception is leasing for maximum term of two years.

According to Inchon mayor, the decision to return flag was made in connection with 20th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Seoul and Moscow. The flag will be triumphantly handed over to Russian president Dmitry Medvedev at G20 Summit to be held in Nov 11-12 in Seoul.

Mayor added that Russia also possesses variety of Korea-related historical values. According to him, it would be a friendly step if Russia offers an opportunity to exhibit those relics at S Korean museums.

Cruiser Varyag was scuppered in the Battle at Chemulpo. Along with gunboat Koreyets, the cruiser entered a loosing battle with 14 Japanese warships. Varyag was seriously damaged and lost the most of guns. To avoid disgraceful capture, Varyag's commander decided to sink the cruiser.
