Two foreign poaching ships were detained in Far East
24.11.2010
Russian frontier service patrol ship detained two foreign fishing vessels off Russia's Far East in Wednesday night; the vessels are suspected of frontier trespassing and illegal fishing in Russian territorial waters. Both ships are convoyed to Nakhodka port for further inquiry, reported RIA Novosti referring to LCol Natalia Rondaleva, press secretary of Russian FSB Frontier Service, Primorsky Krai.
"Frontiersmen arrested Panamanian-flagged schooner Lescado-1 and Cambodian-flagged trawler Mayut for violation of Russian border and illegal fishing. Both foreign vessels were found off northern part of Primorsky Krai. They were not authorized to stay within Russian territorial waters. Crews of arrested vessels are mixed and consist of Russians, Indonesians, and S Koreans. Both shipmasters are Russians", said the interviewee.
According to her, inspection team found tanks full of live crab in lower holds of Lescado-1. As was said by the shipmaster, there are 10 tons of king crab and blue crab. No documents confirming legality of the catch were presented.
"The frontiersmen found out that trawler Mayut was also ready for crabbing – six tanks in lower holds were full of sea water", said Mrs. Rondaleva.
She added that Mayut has been already arrested once in Sept 2010 for violation of fishing rules. Except for tanks equipped for storage and transportation of live crab, there was about 3,500 kg herring and calmar used as bait.
The shipmaster paid RUR 25,000 fine for violation of harvesting rules and sea checkpoint passing rules.
"After payment of the fine, the ship was released from arrest and got free practice on Nov 20. Four days later, however, the vessel was detained again on suspicion of pouching", pointed out Mrs. Rondaleva.
The interviewee said that being convoyed by armed frontiersmen, both vessels head for Nakhodka port to undergo investigations.
"Eighteen vessels under such "handy" flags like Belize, Cambodia, Sierra Leone, Panama etc have been arrested in current year by Russian Frontier Service, Primorsky Krai branch. Over 62,000 crabs were returned to natural habitat; that prevented over RUR 48 mln loss", Rondaleva said.
