Serdiukov: Russia does not refuse to deliver Yakhont missiles to Syria
28.02.2011
Russia does not refuse to implement contract for delivery of Yakhont antiship cruise missiles to Syria, said Russian defense minister Anatoly Serdiukov at Saturday's press conference in Vladivostok.
"The contract is in progress", Serdiukov said.
In Sept 2010 he confirmed that Russia would execute deliveries of Yakhont missiles to Syria in accordance with the contract signed in 2007. Meanwhile, Israel and the U.S. opposes Syria's acquirement of these supersonic missiles which can be launched both from coastal and sea platforms and are capable to destroy enemy ships at the range up to 300 km.
In addition, Russia intends to export antiship missile systems Bastion to Syria. Israel says such arms could come to terrorists' hands, although Russian authorities do not share these concerns.
