All Pacific Fleet ships sheltered from tsunami in bases 11.03.2011

A tsunami moving from Japan towards Russian coast does not threat to Pacific Fleet (PF) warships which sheltered in harbors of Peter the Great Bay and Ussuri Bay, reported Friday RIA Novosti referring to a spokesman for Pacific Fleet.

Magnitude of earthquake hit Japan on Friday was grade 8.8; earth tremors still go on in Tokyo. According to US Geological Survey, earthquake focus was located 382 km northeastward Tokyo; seismic center was at a depth of 10 km underground.

Japanese authorities reported about sufferers; their number is uncertain so far. According to Associated Press referring to Japanese TV, the tsunami caused by earthquake shocks had imposed considerable damages. Reportedly, height of waves in some regions exceeds 10 meters.

"All Pacific Fleet ships stay at their bases. The weather conditions in PF main naval base Vladivostok is normal", said the official.

At the same time he stated that water level near Kuril Islands has got 90 cm higher.
