Russia conducts development of a crucially new submarine powered with closed-cycle engine for littoral zone operations, reports RIA Novosti citing a top-ranking representative of the Navy Main HQ.

"We develop a radically new littoral zone submarine with closed-cycle engine", said the admiral.

As opposed to classic open-circle engines, closed-cycle powerplant does not eject gas from turbine to environment but directs it to burner, creating additional thrust and increasing engine effectiveness.

On March 19 Russia is going to celebrate the 105th anniversary of Russian submarine force.

According to the admiral, in the long view such subs would replace present and perspective diesel electric analogs. "Such submarines will be capable to stay in submerged position for weeks without surfacing", said the interviewee.

He underlined that diesel powerplant would also remain on board such subs, but only as a reserve one.
