Practical phase of the Russian-Norwegian joint naval exercise Pomor-2011 started in severe weather conditions; Northern Fleet (NF) large ASW ship Vice Admiral Kulakov and Norwegian frigate Helge Ingstad. Sea disturbance and wind strength exceeded force 5, wind speed sometimes reached 15 mps. However, despite the weather NF mariners and their Norwegian counterparts completed all tasks of the exercise's day one.

Pomor-2011 exercise started in the Barents Sea

The first element was effectively performed at the exit of the Kola Bay; that was detection and interception of fast-speed "enemy" boats which role was played by NF Kola flotilla's torpedo retrievers. Marine unit headed by Snr Lt Ruzal Akhmetzianov were on board Vice Admiral Kulakov ready to conduct counter-terror attack. Being armed with heavy machineguns Utes, they organized defense along the ship's deck perimeter.
The second element was artillery firing of main guns. Large ASW ship Vice Admiral Kulakov fired first. The crewmen shot 30 shells in several minutes firing the 100-mm foredeck gun mounts and successfully hit the target. Norwegian officers on board Vice Admiral Kulakov were impressed by the power of Russian arms. Frigate Helge Ingstad was in the wake of the Russian warship. Its crew also displayed excellent firing of 76-mm bow gun mount.
Finishing the Pomor's day one, Russian and Norwegian servicemen held communication drill and joint maneuvering. Actions of crewmen were highly appreciated by command of both parties.
