Russia's Arctic shelf to be protected by airborne troopers

"General Staff made recommendations how to launch this program. I tasked my assistant Gen. Maj. Alexander Lentsov to elaborate possible variants of joint actions between Airborne Troops, Army and Navy. With this object in mind, we invited marine brigade commanders to our operative conference held last week in Ryazan", said Shamanov at the press conference in Moscow, reports Vesti.
The Airborne Troops Commander admits formation of inter-branch force in the Arctic including airborne, land, and naval units. Along with that, Shamanov said airborne troops would not be deployed in the Arctic zone independently.
Also, the officer denied rumors about stationing of airborne units at Kuril Islands allegedly to reinforce troops deployed there.
Helicopter regiments will be established within Airborne Troops' structure, added Vladimir Shamanov. Supposedly, they will be based in Pskov and Ulyanovsk.
Also, the officer expressed concerns that Kurganmashzavod may frustrate deliveries of BMD-4M airborne personnel carriers under State Defense Order 2011.
