International action Dervish 2011 named after the first allied convoy arrived in Arkhangelsk 70 years ago began on Aug 28 at White Sea Naval Base, Northern Fleet.

Ships of the Dervish convoy brought military equipment and food supplies from Great Britain needed for the Soviet Army in the battles against Nazi German. Right until opening of the second front in 1944, military products delivered from allied countries by Arctic Convoys were the most significant assistance to the USSR.

Naval parade, marching ceremonies, opening of a stela "Town of Military Glory Arkhangelsk", international scientific conference and other social events will be held within the jubilee celebration.

Northern Fleet (NF) small-size ASW ships Onega and Naryan-Mar, and minesweeper RT-236 will participate in the naval parade to take place in the Severnaya Dvina River. NF marines will demonstrate their skills while landing ashore from NF large landing ship Georgy Pobedonosets and assault of the coast.

The festivities will be attended by NF Commander Vice Admiral Vladimir Korolev and official foreign delegations including First Sea Lord Admiral Mark Stanhope (Great Britain).

The core event of the celebration will be the action named "Flower of Memory" implying honors to fallen seamen and pilots of allied countries participated in the Arctic Convoys.

Solemn activities will finish on Sept 1.
