Russia May Create Sea-based Missile Defense System

23.09.2011
Text: RIA Novosti
Russia plans to establish sea-based missile defense system, on Sept 22 said Vladimir Kozin, deputy director of information and press department of Russian Foreign Ministry .

"We have intentions to create sea-based missile defenses. According to our analysis, this system is quite effective and conforms to international maritime law", Kozin said at the video conference "Euro-Atlantic Missile Defense: Viewpoint of Russia and Ukraine".

At present, the US has developed Aegis sea-based missile defense system capable to intercept short-and mid-range ballistic missiles. In prospect, this system will use new missiles able to hit all types of ICBMs.

The US declared their intentions to deploy Aegis-carrying ships in the Black and the Mediterranean seas and possible stationing of such ships in northern seas.
