Annual Russian-Italian joint naval exercise IONIEX will start in the Ionian Sea off Italy, reports RIA Novosti referring to Russian embassy in Italy.
The exercise will last till Nov 14 and be attended by Black Sea Fleet (BSF) task unit consisting of frigate Smetlivy and rescue ship Epron, and Italian frigates Espero and Aviere.
Russian ships anchored on Nov 7 at the port of Taranto in southern Italian province Apulia.
In particular, naval servicemen of the two countries will jointly react on asymmetric threats, conduct search operations, assist distressed ships, and practice elements of tactical maneuvering.
IONIEX joint naval exercise is regularly conducted in the Mediterranean Sea off Italy within the framework of cooperation between Russian and Italian navies.
In 2010 the IONIEX exercise was held off Sicily. Russia dispatched BSF frigate Ladny and BSF salvage tug Shakhter; Italian Navy delegated frigates Artigliere and Aliseo.
