Russian-Indian BrahMos Missile Tested in Baltic Sea
01.12.2011
Test launch of Russian-Indian supersonic cruise missile BrahMos was successfully held in the Baltic Sea by Indian frigate INS Teg (Project 11356), reports ITAR-TASS referring to a source involved in the tests.
According to him, the test launch was carried out in order to check compatibility of the ship's missile system with BrahMos missiles. Having left bow vertical launch system, the missile entered flight trajectory and reached assigned point in the sea test range. According to telemetric records, all onboard equipment worked normally.
Second trio of Project 11356 Talwar frigates – INS Teg, INS Tarkash, and INS Trikand – is being constructed for Indian Navy by Yantar Shipyard (Kaliningrad) since 2007. According to schedule, the batch will be delivered in 2013-2014. All ships are equipped with BrahMos attack missile system comprising 8 missiles placed in vertical launch system 3S-14E.
Project 11356 frigate is designed on the basis of Russian Project 11351 patrol ship. Russia has already built three frigates of this project for Indian Navy at Baltiysky Zavod shipyard (St. Petersburg) in 1999-2003. The contract for the first 3-ship batch cost about $ 1 bln, the second trio - $ 1.6 bln.
It was decided to build 6 similar frigates for Russia's Black Sea Fleet at Yantar shipyard till 2015 under updated project; two of them have been already laid down in 2011.
