Contest "Naval Wreath of Glory: Sailors Serving to Motherland" Discussed on Avrora
06.02.2012
Steering committee of the international historical contest "Naval Wreath of Glory: Sailors Serving to Motherland" convened on Feb 2 in cruiser Avrora, affiliate of the Central Naval Museum. Under that contest, an array of activities, conferences and open lessons will be conducted on occasion of 200th anniversary of the Patriotic War 1812 and contribution of Russian naval mariners.
Several jubilees significant for Russian history will be celebrated in 2012; among them is anniversary of the war against Napoleon which had quite dire consequences for French invaders. Many activities held by the Marine Glory National Center will be dedicated to that remarkable event and aimed at preservation of victorious chapters of Russian Navy's history. Important details of the coming contest were discussed at the mess room of the Avrora museum cruiser. For the first time in 7 years, the contest will be actively attended by Estonian and Belarusian schoolchildren. Among participants of the session were representatives of naval colleges, cultural figures, officials from St. Petersburg city administration. In her welcoming speech, vice president of the Marine Glory National Center Zalina Medoyeva expressed her gratitude to all participants and wished success in patriotic education of present-day youth.
The Central Naval Museum is one of the contest initiators; according to the museum's deputy director Sergei Kurnosov, the museum has joined in active work since the very beginning; late in Feb it will take part in research and practice conference named "Sailors in the Patriotic War 1812". In addition, the museum will arrange touring exhibition and issue topical booklets. It is planned to give open lessons to schoolchildren and perform historic re-enactment at Borodino battlefield. Contribution of Russian Navy to the Patriotic War of 1812 is one of glorious chapters in our history. Few people know that sailors of the Guard Naval Barracks and Black Sea Fleet 75-th Naval Barracks effectively fought on land theater. Participants of the conference hope that the contest would attract young people by provoking interest to naval history and promoting popularization of maritime activities and professions.
