Russian defense ministry plans to purchase 8 multipurpose and 8 strategic nuclear-powered submarines by 2020, said Chief of General Staff Nikolai Makarov.

"So far, we have plans to build eight subs of each project [eight Yasen-class SSGNs and eight Borei-class SSBNs]", the general said answering the question whether the ministry really decided to buy more submarines, reports RIA Novosti.

"Increasing of submarines' procurement is being worked out", he said.

Earlier, it was planned to purchase 20 submarines, 35 corvettes, 15 frigates, and put in service 8 Borei-class nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines which are platforms for SLBMs Bulava.
