Northern Fleet Marines to Attend Anti-Piracy Mission
30.03.2012
Preparing for the long-range cruise, marine antiaircrafters held on board firing drills by MANPADS Igla. The drills took place in NF training range in the Barents Sea with use of dummy targets. Results of firings were excellent.
In 2011 during anti-piracy mission of large ASW ship Severomorsk headed by Capt 1 rank Andrei Klimenko, NF marines prevented capturing of Greek-flagged tanker United Emblem attacked by pirates in the Red Sea 45 miles southwestward Yemeni port Hodeida.
Having received alarm call, the Russian ship instantly set a course for assigned area. Deck-based helicopter took off and flew round the tanker; crewmen sheltered in engine room in accordance with instructions. Then the helicopter returned to Severomorsk, picked up boarding party and dropped them on the tanker. By that time, pirates left the vessel being afraid of Russian marines.
