Zelenodolsk Shipyard today laid down a keel for a first-rank patrol ship Ocean; it is the first ocean-going ship designed for Russian Coast Guard, the yard's press service told Central Navy Portal.

Among attendants of the keel-laying ceremony were Director General of JSC Zelenodolsk Shipyard Renat Mistakhov, Deputy Prime Minister of Tatarstan Asgat Safarov, Director of Coast Guard Dept in Russian FSB Frontier Service Yury Alekseyev, Director General of JSC Almaz Central Design Bureau Alexander Shlyakhtenko, Chief Designer of Project Ocean Boris Leikis, representatives of supplying agencies, and other officials.

According to the guests addressing the ceremony, the ship laid down today is the first one of this kind designed in the post-Soviet period and fully meets requirements of maritime frontiersmen. The ship is multi-functional, has high combat capabilities and can participate in full-scale rescue operations. Main purpose of Ocean patrol ship is protection of Russia's exclusive economic zone.

Although detailed characteristics have not been disclosed so far, it is known that the ship's displacement exceeds 3,000 tons and length is about 100 meters. The ship is armed with 76-mm gun mount and carries fast-speed motorboats and a search-and-rescue helicopter.

Russian Coast Guard is expected to order a series of such ships to replace overaged patrol ships in the north and Pacific regions.
