Representatives of Black Sea Fleet (BSF) International Cooperation Dept and their counterparts from Italian Navy started planning the program of the IONIEX-2012 bilateral naval exercise. During the consultations, the parties discussed implementation of the Russo-Italian intergovernmental agreement on the prevention of incidents at sea beyond territorial waters, and talked over scenario of the coming exercise.

Russian, Italian Mariners Discuss Program of IONIEX-2012 Exercise

It is planned to hold the IONIEX-2012 exercise in Nov in the Ionic Sea with the call at Italian Navy's main base Taranto. Purpose of the exercise is improvement of interoperability between Russia's Black Sea Fleet and Italian Navy, training of ships' commanding officers and headquarters in planning and performing of naval operations, enrichment of knowledge and understanding of practical procedures. Working language of the exercise is English.
Russian Navy will be represented by BSF destroyer Smetlivy and seagoing salvage tug Shakhter.
The IONIEX-2012 planning process implies meetings, planning conferences in Russia and Italy, and pre-exercise conference in Taranto.
