A monument to Sergei Kovalev was opened in St. Petersburg. On Aug 15, the legendary designer of submarines could have celebrated his 93-th birthday, reports Gazeta.spb.ru.

Totally, about 100 submarines of three generations were built under 8 projects designed by Sergei Kovalev, reports Saint Petersburg TV Channel.

Sergei Kovalev was not only genius designer but talented artist, too.

According to Vesti Petersburg, some people consider prescient Kovalev's words cited on the monument: "If Russia wants to remain sovereign state, it must be militarily very strong. What comes into great importance here is development of maritime strategic force".

"We wanted this monument not to be too pompous, because Sergei Kovalev was an exceedingly modest kind of man. At the same time, he was talented in many areas. Of course, it is impossible to show all his talents in this stone. Although his lifework was designing of strategic submarines, we tried to display his genius by his books and pictures", deputy director general of Rubin Design Bureau Alexander Glazov said at the monument opening ceremony.
