Russian president Vladimir Putin called development and modernization of Russian defense industry the key governmental and national priority.

"Today, development and modernization of defense industry are the prime governmental and national priorities. Among key objectives in this area are skill formation and introduction of advanced technologies", wrote Putin in his congratulatory letter associated with the Gunmaker Day in Russia, reports Interfax referring to the Kremlin press service.

"I am confident that basing on wide experience of your predecessors, complete professionalism of scientists, engineers and experts, you will reach all objectives, Russian Army and Navy will be equipped with the most advanced weapons, and our country will strengthen its stance at the global arms market", Putin said.

He pointed out that founding of the holiday was a tribute to numerous generations of Russian weapon makers. "Their labor and talent created unique arms and formed legendary professional traditions which have been successfully tested by time. Names of G.S. Shpagin, S.I. Mosin, F.V. Tokarev, V.A. Degtyarev, M.T. Kalashnikov and other outstanding designers were deservedly put into heroic chronicle of our Motherland", said Putin in his congratulation.

"I wish you success in the important work for the good of Russia and in the interests of its national security, health and happiness", wrote the president.

Premier Dmitry Medvedev also congratulated Russian gunmakers on their holiday. "This date was selected not by chance, because September 19 is the Michael the Archangel Day who is also esteemed as a patron of armorers. The new holiday is a tribute of respect to all creators of Russian weapons, to those who made vast contribution in defense capacity of our country, development of national export capability, and enhancing of Russia's positions in the world", wrote the head of government in his congratulatory letter.

"Today Russian designers, engineers and technologists face large-scale objectives. Russian armed forces, special services, and law enforcement authorities must be equipped with up-to-date weapons. I am confident that Russian gunmakers faithful to traditions of known masters will reach goals and continue to protect national interests", pointed out Medvedev.

The Gunmaker Day is celebrated in Russia on Sept 19. It was established by presidential decree in Dec 2011.
