Keel-laying ceremony of an Izumrud-class coast guard ship (Project 22460, serial number 504) took place on Sept 21 at JSC Almaz Shipbuilding Firm in St. Petersburg. On the same day, Russian coast guard ensign was hoisted on the similar ship Zhemchug (serial number 503).

The solemn activities were attended by top-ranking officials of Russian FSB, St. Petersburg city administration, and frontier service.

Project 22460 coast guard ship was developed by Severnoye Design Bureau (St. Petersburg) for protection of state borders and territorial waters, as well as counter-terror and antipiracy missions.

In 2012, JSC Almaz Shipbuilding Firm handed over two Sobol-class patrol boats (Project 12200) to Russian FSB Frontier Service. In total, the security agency plans to purchase twenty five Izumrud-class coast guard ships, and Almaz is ready to perform that task, reports the shipyard's press service.

Displacement of such ships is 630 tons, full speed is 30 knots, operating range is 3,500 nautical miles, endurance is 30 days, length is 62.5 meters.

Ships of this class are equipped with the most advanced communication facilities and navigation aids, a helicopter, and onboard automated control system.
