EU expresses worry over Russia’s naval base plans in Abkhazia

06.02.2009
The EU is worried about Russia’s plans to build a military-naval base on the territory of Abkhazia, James Appaturai, an official spokesman for the EU, said summing up the results of a regular meeting of the NATO-Georgia Commission on February 5th.

The EU will see the realization of such plans without the agreement of the Georgian government as a violation of the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Georgia.

All 27 members of the EU support the territorial integrity of Georgia and view Abkhazia and South Ossetia as parts of Georgian territory, ITAR-TASS reported.

The EU calls on Russia to behave responsibly and implement the agreements it has signed. According to an announcement made by the commander of the Russian Navy, Russia will begin building a base for its Black Sea Fleet in the Abkhaz port of Ochamchira this year.
