The Russian escort vessel Neustrashimy had to repel an attack by pirates in the Gulf of Aden on January 1, 2009, by opening fire, Captain First Class Oleg Gurinov, the man who headed the mission of the Russian ship in the Gulf of Aden, told journalists.

“From December 31 to January 1, we were in the central part of the Gulf of Aden escorting a convoy. One of the ships in the convoy strayed by approximately 80 nautical miles. Fire was immediately opened at the ship. We rushed to help, defended the ship, and it continued sailing,” said Gurinov.

Gurinov also talked about the tanker Elya, which was also escorted by the Neustrashimy.

“Pirates began approaching it early in the morning of January 1. As it became clear that it was not a civilian ship but only one trying to pose as such, we fired warning shots from our guns. We were further forced to fire on target, and they disappeared fast,” the captain said.
