Russia and Turkey agree to cooperate on military security in Black Sea

Russia and Turkey have agreed to cooperate in the area of military-naval security in the Black Sea, taking into account the interests of both countries, says a document on a new stage in relations and further deepening of the multidimensional partnership between the two countries.

Moscow and Ankara “confirm the importance of cooperation, including interaction among the countries bordering the Black Sea” in the framework of the military-naval groups of ready action BLACKSEAFOR, the operation Black Sea Harmony, the document on measures to bolster trust and security, as well as other mechanisms for confronting new asymmetric challenges.

“In this context, Russia and Turkey express support for the initiative of calling regular meetings of the defense ministries and army chiefs of staff of Black Sea region countries,” the document says.

The sides confirm in their declaration their adherence to the Montreux Convention Regarding the Regime of Navigation in Straits and their international obligations “regarding the security of navigation and the protection of the environment, the importance of conserving the principle of free passage and navigation in straits, the protection of human life, property, the environment and navigation.”
