Sebastopol officials want Black Sea Fleet to release classified information

24.02.2009
The Sebastopol Employment office and Employment Fund are demanding that the command of the Black Sea Fleet release the list of workers susceptible to be laid off, which is classified information.

The publication of such information is a felony in Russia.

Andrey Merkulov, a city councilman, told Ria Novosti that the head of the Sebastopol city administration, Sergey Kunitsin, and his deputy, Vladimir Kazarin, were engaged in an information war against the Black Sea Fleet, scaring Sebastopol with massive layoffs at the Fleet.

“Sebastopol in a few years could turn into a city of hooligans and draymen, who, in addition, know how to fight,” Kazarin allegedly said. According to the city administration, some 3,000 officers and 6,000 civilians could lose their jobs with the Black Sea Fleet.

“Russian Defense Minister Anatoly Serdiukov, when in Sebastopol, talked about 1,500 officers due to retire,” said Merkulov. He added that the city administration was attempting to scare Black Sea Fleet men to force them to switch to the Ukrainian Navy to complete their service.
