General Staff: New security treaty must include Arctic

Deputy leader in the Russian General Staff Anatoly Nogovitsyn says the proposed new European Security Treaty should include also the North Atlantic and the Arctic.
Mr. Nogovitsyn, who spoke in a Federation Council session last week, highlighted that the new treaty, a proposal raised by President Dmitry Medvedev, should include not only the European regions, but also the North Atlantic and the Arctic, Regnum reports.
The high-ranking military leader in the meeting also argued that there is a "legal vacuum in relations with the Arctic countries".
Russia is very interested in its security in this region, he highlighted, Regnum writes.
The proposed Security Treaty is promoted by Russia as an all-European alternative to current security alliances and cooperation on the continent.
