Sevmash accelerates efforts on overhaul and refitting of INS Vikramaditya aircraft carrier

09.09.2009
Shipwrights of Sevmash defense shipyard accelerates efforts on overhaul and refitting of INS Vikramaditya aircraft carrier (former RNS Admiral Gorshkov, tactical air-carrying cruiser), as Anastasia Nikitinskaya, the shipyard's press-service director said referring to Nikolai Kalistratov, Director General of the enterprise.

"Receipt of advance at the rate of $102 million was a great motivation to accelerate efforts. The number of personnel engaged in the works will be increased up to 2500; the second shift was organized", Nikolai Kalistratov comments.

According to package intergovernmental agreement, signed in Delhi in Jan, 2004, the hull of Russian air-carrying cruiser Admiral Gorshkov was transferred free-of-charge to the Indian party subject to its further modernization at Sevmash shipyard and equipping with Russian-made air group. Russia is also obliged to train about 1 500 men of Indian crew of renewed ship and to construct basing infrastructure for the aircraft carrier in Indian Ocean water area. Total value of the contract was initially assessed as $1,5 billion including about $974 million for transformation of the ship into adequate aircraft carrier; all works on the ship were supposed to complete in 2008.

However, the terms of contract execution have been put off. The works on the ship refitting have not been financed sufficiently during recent two years. That is the reason of the schedule delay. Russian party declared underestimation of the scope of works and requested additional payment of $2,2 billion for ship upgrading. Russian and Indian governments negotiate for appreciation of the contract. Modernization agreement at a new cost to be signed in October, said Sergei Chemezov, the head of Rostehnologii.

INS Vikramaditya aircraft carrier is about 49% ready. In case of straight-line financing, Sevmash plans to complete upgrading and start contractors' sea trials in 2011. The aircraft carrier is to be transferred to Indian Navy at the end of 2012. Its service life is supposed to be 30 years.

Admiral Gorshkov, previously known as Baku was constructed at Nikolayev shipyard. It was integrated into Northern Fleet in 1987. Its length is 283 m, width - 51 m and displacement is over 45 000 t.
