Nuclear submarine Yury Dolgoruky has started sequent trials

17.09.2009
Nuclear missile submarine Yury Dolgoruky has started the next stage of sea trials in White Sea.

"Dolgoruky has not put to sea for over month. At that time shipwrights eliminated all defects had been found during the previous trials", says Korabel, the newspaper of OJSC PO Sevmashpredpriyatie.

The source says that "the necessity of elimination of some defects revealed after Yury Dolgoruky had been inspected in Sukhona floating dock.

Prompt work of specialists ensured rapid elimination of the failures and leading the submarine to coastal degaussing station (CDS).

Electromagnetic treatment of Dolgoruky lasted several days. Magnetic field parameter of the submarine was brought to required level.

During sequent stage of sea trials the operation of the vessel's systems and equipment will be checked in action.

According to preliminary data, the submarine has to put to sea for 5-6 times in total before transfer to the Navy.

The prototype of the fourth-generation strategic missile submarine Yury Dolgoruky was designed at Rubin Central Design Bureau for Marine Engineering.

The development contract cost of Yury Dolgoruky submarine made 23 bln rub, including 9 bln rub for project design and 14 bln rub for construction.

955 Borei-class NPBMS Yury Dolgoruky has displacement of 14 700/24 000 t. Maximum submergence depth is 450 m; speed is 15/29 knots; crew is 107 men, including 55 officers.

The nuclear power plant was started up at Yury Dolgoruky late December, 2008.

The submarine is planned to be armed with Bulava-M strategic missile system which is also to be tested in 2009.

The missile submarines of 955 Project Alexander Nevsky and Vladimir Monomakh are presently under construction in Severodvinsk shipyard.

According to the Navy General Headquarters, beginning from the fourth sub of this project it is planned to find the reasonable variant of missile submarine which will be in service until 2035-2040.

Strategic submarines of 955 Project are to become the basis of Russian naval strategic nuclear forces after 2018 when presently servicing submarines of 941 Project Akula (under NATO classification – Typhoon); 667 Project BDR Kalmar and BRDM Murena (under NATO classification – Delta-III and Delta-IV correspondingly) will be withdrawn from operational use.
