The unit of combat ships keeping combat watch off Horn of Africa consists of large antisubmarine ship (LAS) Admiral Tributs, tanker Boris Butoma and rescue tug SB-99. The unit left Vladivostok on June 29 and one month later, on July 30 arrived at Horn of Africa to start patrolling the Gulf of Aden and escorting merchant ships.
Ships carry Pacific Fleet Marine units and also two Ka-27 helicopters responsible for aerial surveillance and search of pirates.
"LAS Admiral Tributs, tanker Boris Butoma and rescue tug SB-99 arrived at Seychelles with business visit on October, 2. During 5-day visit unit command paid call to Russian ambassador in the republic", said the interviewee.
According to him, sailors held sport competitions with Seychelles military teams and went sightseeing. Besides, the unit replenished supplies of food and fresh water in the port of Victoria.
"This is the third Pacific Fleet unit taking part in international operation in the Gulf of Aden. The first unit consisting of LAS Admiral Vinogradov, rescue tug Fotiy Krylov, tankers Boris Butoma and Pechenga kept combat watch near Horn of Africa since January till March. The second unit comprising LAS Admiral Panteleev, rescue tug SB-37, tankers Izhora and Irkut participated in international operation since Apr 27 till June 7. In total, since January 2009 till now Pacific Fleet ships successfully escorted over 100 Russian and foreign vessels. Number of attempts to hijack vessels by pirates was prevented", specified Martov.
He reminded that crews of two units have worthily accomplished combat mission, not even once prevented pirate attacks on peaceful fleets escorted by the Pacific mariners. Pacific Fleet command has received dozens of grateful letters and radiograms from captains of vessels and directors of shipping companies from various countries.
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev medaled 15 Russian mariners fought Somali pirates on July, 13. Among awardees were crewmembers of LAS Admiral Vinogradov, Admiral Panteleev, officers of Pacific Fleet naval aviation.
Somali has been no more united state since 1991; its regime is not able to deal with piracy matter. According to the UN, over 120 pirate assaults on merchant vessels near Horn of Africa were recorded in 2008.
