BrahMos missile to be tested this year at the Baltic Sea

BrahMos missile to be tested this year at the Baltic Sea 04.02.2010
Russian-Indian sea-based supersonic cruise missile BrahMos will be tested this year at the Baltic Sea, said Dr. Sivathanu Pillai, managing director of joint venture BrahMos Aerospace when its head office was visited by Nikolai Patrushev, the secretary of Russian Security Council.

According to Hindu, the missile will be launched from Indian Talwar-class frigate which is proceeding to completion at Yantar Shipyard (Kaliningrad, Russia).

BrahMos vertical launcher delivered from India has been already installed at the frigate, said Dr. Pillai.

"Co-design of this missile is an eloquent evidence of fruitful work of Russian and Indian scientists and experts. Their labor is based on highest level of confidence", said Mr. Patrushev at the meeting.

Russia is to build three Talwar-class frigates for India; stealth technologies were applied in the construction. All ships will be armed with BrahMos missiles which have been commissioned in Indian Army and Navy. Currently, works on modernization of the missile are in progress. By 2012 a new version of missile is planned to be installed on Su-30MKI multirole fighters and ten Project-877EKM submarines presently in service in Indian Navy. Joint venture BrahMos Aerospace develops hypersonic variant of the missile with cruise speed of M=5-7 which is twice as much as current analogs have.
