Sevmash: building of new-gen subs is behind schedule 11.02.2010
Construction of new generation submarines at Sevmash shipyard (Severodvinsk) is behind schedule. That was reported at the session of interagency coordinating group held at the shipyard, informed Sevmash Press Service.

"An underrun was made by Sevmash shipyard and adjacent companies", specified the press service.

In was mentioned at the session that the shipyard would have a very stressful year ahead in terms of defense order execution. "We're in need of additional 500 qualified employees on such specialties as coppersmith, machine fitter, fitting-out expert. Despite the fact that we have increased number of employees by 2,000 men during recent 2 years, labor power is still insufficient", said Nikolai Kalistratov, Sevmash Director General.

The meeting was led by Vladimir Pospelov, member of Military Industrial Committee and Nikolai Borisov, Russian Navy Deputy Commander-in-Chief on weaponry. Among other attendants were directors of Rubin Design Bureau, Malakhit Design Bureau, state-run corporation Rosatom, Ministry of Industry and Trade and other authorities.

Members of coordinating group discussed state of nuclear-powered submarines Yury Dolgoruky, Alexander Nevsky, Vladimir Monomakh, Severodvinsk, and Kazan.

Lead sub of Project 955 Borei 4-gen SSBN Yury Dolgoruky holds subsequent phase of sea trials. She is followed by serial subs of the project being constructed on the shipyard's slipway – Alexander Nevsky and Vladimir Monomakh. The fourth sub is being prepared for keel laying ceremony. Apart from creation of up-to-date SSBNs, Sevmash continues building new-gen SSNs Severodvinsk and Kazan. Expectedly, the Navy will commission SSN Severodvinsk, lead sub of Project 885 Yasen in 2011.

Sevmash delivered the first nuclear-powered submarine to the Navy on Dec 17, 1958. In total, the shipyard has built 128 nuclear-powered subs. The main enterprise of Severodvinsk employs 27,000 shipwrights.
