In addition, it was said in the Russia-EU common statement that the parties called for immediate opening of checkpoint to allow products, humanitarian aid, and people into the Gaza Strip.
In the night of May 31 Israeli marines boarded one of the vessels of the convoy carrying humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip. On board the vessel were activists of European human rights organizations. Media reported of 19 deaths; Israel insists that 9 persons died in result of the operation.
Israeli government stated that there were passengers who attacked marines by knives and sticks; the videotape of those actions is considered an evidence for this version.
Dozens of countries have already condemned Israel's actions. Turkey which vessel was involved recalled its ambassador from Israel and canceled joint military exercise.
Human rights activists have declared intentions to send two more vessels to the Gaza Strip despite maritime blockade which has been lasting for three years now. Israel demands humanitarian aids to be delivered to Israeli ports and sent to Gaza Strip only after appropriate checking.
