Four commands to be established instead six military districts – Russian General Staff
09.06.2010
Russian General Staff initiates establishment of four Operational-Strategic Commands (OSC) instead six Military Districts, reported RIA Novosti referring to General of the Army Nikolai Makarov, Chief of the General Staff.
Makarov delivered a speech at Tuesday's session of the defense and security committee at the Federation Council.
"The question is Commands "West", "East", "Center", and "South". In particular, Command "East" will comprise Far East Military District, part of Siberian Military District, and Pacific Fleet", said Makarov. Commander of Far East Military District will head Command "East".
The official also mentioned about General Staff's plans to integrate Moscow and Leningrad military districts into Command "Center"; Command "South" will be established on the basis of North Caucasian Military District and include Black Sea Fleet and Caspian Flotilla.
As was previously reported by RIA Novosti referred to high-ranking military official, Moscow and Leningrad military districts would be integrated into St. Petersburg-headquartered Western Military District (OSC), Southern Military District (OSC) would be established instead of North Caucasian Military District. Western part of Siberian and Volga-Urals military districts were supposed to become Central Military District (OSC) with headquarters in Yekaterinburg; eastern part of Siberian and Far East military districts were planned to form Khabarovsk-headquartered Eastern Military District (OSC).
"Given new look of the Russian Armed Forces, it is also planned to establish eight air bases and two naval bases", said the official.
In particular, the bases will be created near Voronezh, Chelyabinsk, Chita, and Komsomolsk-on-Amur.
