Perspective 4th generation diesel-electric submarine St. Petersburg which flag-hoisting ceremony was held early May is under state trials in the Baltic Sea, said Vice Admiral Viktor Chirkov, Baltic Fleet (BF) Commander.

"Submarine St. Petersburg is presently in the Baltic Sea passing state trials. In accordance with the schedule, various tasks are being performed; in particular, testing of the sub's hydro-acoustic features, operation of power plant, etc.", pointed out the fleet commander.

Diesel-electric submarine St. Petersburg is unique with her technical characteristics. The sub has no analogs worldwide as for combination of silence, endurance, operational range, and reliability. These submarines are designed for destruction of enemy's submarines and surface ships; defense of naval bases, sea shore, and sea lanes; conducting reconnaissance.

Submarine St. Petersburg was built by Admiralteyskie Verfi shipyard. Displacement is 1,765 tons; length is 67 meters; beam is 7.1 meters; submerged speed is 21 knots; surface speed is 10 knots; endurance is 45 days. The submarine is armed with six 533-mm torpedo tubes (combat load is 18 torpedoes).
