Western Military District celebrates first birthday
01.09.2011
Western Military District includes former Moscow and Leningrad military districts, Northern and Baltic fleets, 1st Air Force and Air Defense Command, and other units and divisions earlier directly subordinated to defense ministry, including railway troops. As a result of the reforms, a powerful inter-branch grouping was founded at western strategic theater.
Main objective of the reorganization was creation of mobile and combat-worthy groupings capable to accomplish assigned tasks without preliminary preparations. Through the first year of functioning, almost all WMD units have been put on constant alert.
Methods of cooperation between Army, Navy, Air Force, and Airborne Troops have been successfully practiced at exercises and drills throughout the recent year. The decision to shift to outsourcing in logistic spheres contributed much to effectiveness of combat training. As of today, more than a half of WMD units and divisions use services of commercial organizations while dealing with logistic support tasks.
During the passed period WMD have carried out over 30 headquarter exercises, more than 200 tactical drills and 1,200 firings. Over 300 servicemen were awarded upon results of the passed year; five of them received governmental medals, and over 70 – defense ministry's medals.
Joint Russo-Belarusian exercise Union Shield 2011 will become a real examination for Western Military District; servicemen are going to accomplish a number of complicated tactical tasks along with Belarusian colleagues.
